To display item-related information on an Electronic Shelf Label (ESL), an integration is required between an ESL management software and a customer-operated price control application (PCA). A price control application is commonly included as a retail-specific module in the Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP), but it can also be a Backstore computer system, or a POS system providing item-related information.
To manage ESL in on-premise installations, the Pricer System software is used.
The process of data exchange assumes the following:
- Upon availability of new item information, or an update for an existing item, the price control application sends an item-related dataset to the ESL management software (Pricer System).
- The Pricer System stores item-related information in an internal database, and in turn uses the attached transceivers to transmit item information to the respective shelf label (ESL).
To facilitate integration with a price control application, multiple standard software-oriented interfaces are available:
- Pricer File Interface, a file/text-based interface
- Pricer Public API, a Web services/SOAP interface
- Pricer REST API
These interfaces are generally targeted at users who want to take full advantage of the available API scope and create their own client applications, and as such, require respective technical expertise.
To assist our customers in the integration process and reduce the related effort, we commonly implement a dedicated integration software (middleware) that acts as an intermediary layer between the customer-operated price control application and the ESL system.
For example, a common scenario for integration based on ERP data export and use of middleware is:
- Price control application exports item-related data in ERP-specific data format
- Middleware software provides communication services and data synchronization
- Middleware software implements custom transformation for ERP data
- Middleware uses the selected API interface to invoke a service of the ESL management software
